How to distinguish the back side from the front side of a bearing


For angular-contact bearings, the two end faces of the outer ring can be observed; the wider end face is designated as the “back,” while the narrower end face is the “face.” If the bearing is marked with a “<,” the face indicated by the pointed end is the “back,” and the face indicated by the open end is the “face.”

Tapered roller bearings are equipped with tapered rollers that are guided by the large flange of the inner ring. The design ensures that the apices of the conical surfaces of the inner-ring raceway, the outer-ring raceway, and the roller rolling surfaces all converge at a single point on the bearing’s central axis. Single-row tapered roller bearings can accommodate radial loads as well as unidirectional axial loads.

Double-row bearings can accommodate radial loads and axial loads in both directions, making them suitable for heavy loads and impact loads. Based on the contact angle (α), they are classified into three types: small, medium, and large cone angles. The larger the contact angle, the greater the capacity for axial load. The outer ring and the inner assembly (consisting of the inner ring, rollers, and cage) can be separated, facilitating assembly and disassembly; during installation, the side of the inner ring with the protruding surface should serve as the axial load-bearing face.
